FDA Approved Menopause Medications

The following FDA Approved Menopause Medications are by no means 100% of the prescriptions available on the market today.  However, these FDA Approved Menopause Medications represent what is probably the most effective and popular of the group.  For your convenience they have been listed alphabetically with a short description of each medication and a link to its page:

Activella - 1- For the treatment of ATROPHY OF VULVA 2- For the treatment of MENOPAUSE 3- For the prevention of OSTEOPOROSIS

Actonel - Actonel is used to treat bone disease (Paget's disease). It reduces bone pain and may prevent long-term complications. It also is used to treat and prevent bone loss (osteoporosis).

Alora - Estrogens are hormones used for replacement in women who are no longer producing proper amounts. Alora is used to treat symptoms associated with menopause and conditions in which hormone levels are low. It may also be used to prevent osteoporosis (bone loss).

Calan - Calan is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium is involved in blood vessel contraction and in controlling the electrical impulses within the heart. By blocking calcium, verapamil relaxes and widens blood vessels and can normalize heartbeats. Verapamil is used to treat chest pain (angina), high blood pressure or irregular heartbeats. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible problems related to use of short-acting calcium channel blockers.

Catapres - Clonidine relaxes and expands (dilates) blood vessels. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).  Catapres may also be used to ease withdrawal symptoms associated with the long-term use of narcotics, alcohol and nicotine (smoking). Other possible uses are to treat Tourette's syndrome, migraine headaches, stomach pain with rectal bleeding (ulcerative colitis), or hot flashes associated with menopause. Catapres may also be used for other purposes as determined by your doctor.

Cenestin - Cenestin is a hormone and is given to women who no longer produce the proper amount. It is used to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes), for brittle bones (osteoporosis), and treats certain cancers in both men and women.

Clonidine - For the management of ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSION used alone or in combination with other agents. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Combipatch - This combination product is used for female hormone replacement therapy in women who are no longer producing proper amounts (e.g., menopause/change of life).

Covera HS - Covera-HS is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium is involved in blood vessel contraction and in controlling the electrical impulses within the heart. By blocking calcium, verapamil relaxes and widens blood vessels and can normalize heart rates. Verapamil is used to treat high blood pressure or chest pain (angina).  Covera-HS may also be used for irregular heartbeats.

Diflucan - Diflucan is an antifungal agent used to treat infections in certain areas of the body caused by yeast and yeast-like organisms.

Effexor - Effexor is used in the treatment of depression. The extended release form of Effexor is also used to treat anxiety.

Esclim - Estrogens are hormones used for replacement in women who are no longer producing proper amounts. Esclim is used to treat symptoms associated with menopause and conditions in which hormone levels are low. It may also be used to prevent osteoporosis (bone loss).

Estraderm - Estrogens are hormones used for replacement in women who are no longer producing proper amounts. Estraderm is used to treat symptoms associated with menopause and conditions in which hormone levels are low. It may also be used to prevent osteoporosis (bone loss).

Estradiol - Estradiol is a hormone and is given to women who no longer produce the proper amount. It is used to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes), for brittle bones (osteoporosis), and treats certain cancers in both men and women.

Estratab - Estratab is a hormone and is given to women who no longer produce the proper amount. It is used to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes), for brittle bones (osteoporosis), and treats certain cancers in both men and women.

Estratest - Estratest is a combination of hormones used to treat symptoms of menopause when estrogens alone are not effective.

Estrin-D  - Estrin D is the first diet pill specifically developed to help menopausal and perimenopausal women lose weight.

Estring - Estring is used to treat vaginal and urinary symptoms associated with menopause/change of life.

Estropipate - Estropipate is a hormone and is given to women who no longer produce the proper amount. It is used to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes), for brittle bones (osteoporosis), and treats certain cancers in both men and women.

Evista - Evista is used after menopause to prevent bone weakening (osteoporosis).

Femhrt - Femhrt is a combination of hormones used to treat symptoms of menopause and to prevent brittle bones (osteoporosis) from occurring.

Fluoxetine - 1- For the treatment of DEPRESSION 2- For the treatment of OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDERS 3- For the treatment of moderate to severe BINGE-EATING AND VOMITING BEHAVIORS It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Fosamax - Alendronate is used to treat certain cases of osteoporosis (brittle bones) and Paget's disease (a bone weakening disorder).

Growth Hormone - HGH, or human growth hormone, is a substance that is produced in the body naturally by the pituitary gland. Growth hormone is an endocrine hormone, the release of which declines as we age. Human growth hormone (HGH), also regulates other hormone levels within the body, such as testosterone, estrogen, melatonin, and DHEA.

Inderal - Inderal belongs to a class of drugs called beta-blockers. Propranolol (amongst other actions) slows the heart and reduces hypertension (high blood pressure). It is used in the treatment of angina (chest pain), hypertension, arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), migraine headaches, tremors, "thyroid storm" and pheochromocytoma.  Inderal may also be used to treat the side effects caused by the use of certain psychiatric drugs.

Menozac - Menozac provides a safe all natural alternative to prescription drugs for the treatment of Menopause Symptoms Relief. 2 tablets a day will have you feeling more like your old self again!

Miacalcin - Calcitonin, a hormone secreted by the thyroid gland, is important in calcium and bone metabolism. It is used to treat Paget's disease, to reduce high levels of calcium or to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis (bone loss).

Nordette - Nordette is used to prevent pregnancy or to regulate your menstrual cycle. Certain brands of birth control pills may be used for treating acne or as a "morning after" pill for emergency contraception. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Use of Nordette does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., HIV, gonorrhea).

Ortho Tri-Cyclen - Ortho Tri-Cyclen is used to prevent pregnancy or to regulate your menstrual cycle. Certain brands of birth control pills may be used for treating acne or as a "morning after" pill for emergency contraception. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Use of Ortho Tri-Cyclen does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., HIV, gonorrhea).

Premarin - Premarin is a hormone and is given to women who no longer produce the proper amount. It is used to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes), for brittle bones (osteoporosis), and treats certain cancers in both men and women.

Premphase - Premphase is a combination of hormones used to treat symptoms of menopause and to prevent brittle bones (osteoporosis) from occurring.

Progesterone - For contraception, specified agent.

Prometrium - Progesterone is a naturally occurring female hormone. This drug is used to treat menstrual problems.

Propranolol -

1 - For the management of ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSION used alone or in combination with other agents.  
2- For the maintenance treatment of ANGINA PECTORIS  
3- For the maintenance treatment of MIGRAINE HEADACHE.  
4- For the maintenance treatment of CARDIAC DYSRHYTHMIAS.  
5- For the maintenance treatment of SUBAORTIC STENOSIS.  
6- For the maintenance treatment of OLD MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.  
7- For the maintenance treatment of ESSENTIAL TREMOR.  
8- As an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA / MEDULLOADRENAL HYPERFUNCTION following primary treatment with an alpha-adrenergic blocker. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Provera - Provera is a female hormone. It is used to treat amenorrhea (lack of menstrual flow), abnormal bleeding from the uterus, or endometriosis (a painful condition where the lining of the uterus is abnormal). It is also used to treat certain types of cancer and menopausal symptoms.

Prozac - Fluoxetine is used to treat depression, bulimia (an eating disorder), and various obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). It is also used to treat PMS (premenstrual syndrome).  Prozac may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

SAMe - SAM-e's main claim to fame is reducing joint pain and other aches and pains. Makers of SAM-e suggest that it may be effective in battling moderate depression without causing the annoying side effects ( insomnia and loss of libido)  which  prescription anti-depressants can create in certain individuals. 

Verapamil -

1- For the maintenance treatment of ANGINA PECTORIS
2- For the maintenance treatment of ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSION
3- For the maintenance treatment of CARDIAC DYSRHYTHMIAS.

Zoloft - Sertraline is used to treat a mental or mood disorder.
